GGMA Market Wrap 19-05-2026
Asia traded with a clear de-risking tone for a third consecutive session as the AI-led memory complex took the brunt — Kospi -3.7% led the move, MSCI EM (-1.1%) and the Nikkei (-0.5%) followed, despite Trump calling off his planned Iran strike at the request of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
That Iran-strike pull-back weighed on WTI (-1.5%). The US separately extended its Russia seaborne-oil sanctions waiver by 30 days to 'help stabilise the physical crude market' (Bessent).
The bond rout from yesterday extended at the long end — US 30y UST at ~5.13% (highest since 2023) and JGB 30y at 1999 debut highs, as Japan's faster-than-expected Q1 GDP (+0.5% QoQ / +2.1% annualized, vs +1.7% survey).
The RBA Minutes confirmed an 8-1 vote for the May hike to 4.35% with the conditioning assumption now embedding 'a little more than two cash-rate increases in 2026', and Hunter reinforced the hawkish posture at the Bloomberg Forum — 'more worried about inflation expectations than in past'. AUDUSD nonetheless declined on the global risk-off tone, and ASX (+1.1%) was the day's lone equity bright spot in the APac block.
TIC data for March showed Japan and China leading the decline in foreign UST holdings (Japan -4% to $1.192trn; China -6% to $652bn, lowest since Sep-2008) — a structural backdrop for the long-end repricing, with HSBC's Neumann framing the move as a 'structural rise in yields' bound to push up volatility of risk assets.
FX showed USD was bid (USDKRW +0.8%, USDZAR +0.5%, AUDUSD -0.5%, NZDUSD -0.3%, USDSEK +0.3%). Bitcoin and precious metals declined.
In equities, the AI-infra capital-formation theme stayed live — Google and Blackstone announced an AI cloud joint venture (Blackstone ~$5bn equity for a majority stake, Google supplying TPUs, first 500MW online by 2027), NextEra agreed to buy Dominion for $67bn in the largest energy M&A since Exxon-Mobil 1998, Nvidia's Huang said China will 'over time' open its market to US AI chips, and Meta moved 7,000 workers into AI roles ahead of headcount cuts later this week — a pattern that StanChart matched with a >15% corporate-role cut plan to 2030, framed as 'replacing lower-value human capital with financial capital'. The Musk-vs-OpenAI lawsuit was tossed by Judge Gonzalez Rogers, removing a tail risk for the OpenAI restructuring.
What to watch today: Canada CPI April 14:30 is the binary catalyst (Scotia hot call +1% MoM / +3.5% YoY vs JPM +0.7% / +3.2%); UK Labour Market and BoE Breeden are the GBP catalysts; Fed Waller and ECB Lane share a Frankfurt research-forum panel back-to-back (14:00 / 15:00).
